Un Mexico palmero sustentable
Palm oil is an important edible oil crop that employs millions of people, supports farmer livelihoods, contributes to economic development, and requires less land to produce more oil than any other vegetable oil crop.
The rapid expansion of oil palm plantations, however, has caused deforestation and the conversion of peatlands, both of which contribute to climate change and other environmental impacts. Additionally, palm oil production has led to significant concerns over human rights abuses and the exploitation of indigenous people and local communities.
To ensure palm oil is produced sustainably, a holistic, inclusive and collaborative palm oil sustainability program was is being implemented in Mexico. Through the holistic program, all levels of the supply chain are engaged to support the adoption of good sustainable practices and identify where risks may be, and how to effectively implement positive impact.
The program is supporting smallholder farmers in Mexico to achieve RSPO independent group certification. Smallholder farmers represent a significant portion of the palm industry, but barriers limit their access to training and certification. These trainings and developments help to increase sustainable palm practices and can positively impact livelihoods.

THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM ARE AS FOLLOWS

Ensure an efficient, inclusive supply chain by collaborating across the entire supply chain – from the national palm oil federation to our supplier and smallholders in their supply base
Ensure the production of sustainable palm oil by the implementation of good agricultural practices
Improve the quality of life of the producers and protecting their rights on the lands, preserving the woods and biodiversity thru the commitment of No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation (NDPE)
Being the role model of sustainable development for the industry of the palm in Mexico demonstrating impact and searching the improvement of the program by new alliances.
